All the way up until the fall of 2012, Christian Rap was something I forced myself to listen to in attempt to rid my mind of the songs I used to listen to. I had no problems listening to Gungor, Coldplay, and stuff like that, but Christian Rap was so corny to me for the longest time. Then I saw a Facebook post of Lecrae’s Gravity album on the top of the iTunes charts and decided to give it a chance. The production on that album was and still is way better than any rap I had ever heard, and the message behind the music was convicting and encouraging! I went to the Unashamed Tour in Dallas, Texas with a few friends and I was hooked.
This is where it gets good. So, one night my friend Ben, who was about to lead a trip to Mongolia, walks into one of our meetings and says, “Hey Ryan, we need your skills.” When he walked out I started thinking about the possible skills he needed from me. All I could think of was basketball and people, but I asked him later just to make sure. When I asked him, he looked deep into my eyes and said, “We need rap!” I thought to myself, “I know I’m black, but I can’t rap to save my life. How am I going to rap to help other lives?” However, a couple days later I woke up around 6 a.m. and started hearing lyrics in my head. That morning I wrote a verse and chorus, and the song was finished within the next week or so. Been creating ever since.
